Lots-a-finishes

Well, you’d hope so after an absence of 4 months from the blog. 

I am going to be a first-time grandma in November this year.  I’m so excited that my eldest son and his partner are going to have their first baby.  At this stage I know that it is a girl, but that’s all, as Mum and Dad are keeping potential names and the due date as surprises for the rest of us.

Since hearing the news I’ve been busy knitting and sewing all sorts of goodies.  It has been many years since I knitted anything but I find it very soothing sitting in the lounge with the fire blazing and doing (what I call) mindless knitting – blankets, simple cardigans, even a dress or two for a little knitted bunny!




I’ve made baby MJ (as she is known so far) 3 quilts.  I blogged about the snowball quilt here.

Here is a little bassinette quilt that I made from scraps.  The centre panel is one that my daughter-in-law chose.  This little quilt has fabrics that I’ve used in a quilt for my Mum so it has extra special memories.  I hand quilted parts of the panel in Perle cotton.



Next is a cot quilt.  Again, this is made mostly from scraps.  I think this is my favourite.  I followed a tutorial on making pinwheels from 5-inch squares.  The top went together beautifully and was finished in a day.

I designed and quilted all the tops myself.

Quilty Folk Quilt Along

I finally finished my  prints on solids quilt , which I am very happy with. At the time I was making it, I planned to hand quilt it and my local quilt shop recommended using 100% bamboo batting. In the end I could not get my quilt stitches to look as nice as I wanted, so I gave up and straight line quilted it with my walking foot instead. However, I found the bamboo batting very messy to deal with and I was constantly sneezing. I also find it rather cold - it seems to wick body heat away - has anyone else experienced this? I won’t be using 100% bamboo batting ever again.  I quilted this in a cross-hatch diagonal with my walking foot. I love the brown and orange backing which I found as a remnant at my local quilt shop. I’ve decided to join Audrey’s - Quilty Folk - slow quilt along.  I have admired her work for many years and this is a chance to learn how to be a lot more creative with my quilts. Stuck in the blooming brambles

Bramble Blooms Pt 2 Since my last post, when I actually managed to prepare the centrepiece for the Quilty Folk QAL , I have been stuck, if not entangled, in what to do next. Convinced that my lack of creativity for the blooms in the centre was because my centrepiece was boring, I made two more centrepieces and discarded both, as they still didn’t get the creative juices flowing.   And, right from the start I have grappled with the title of Bramble Blooms, which to me conjures up an English country scene with thickets of brambles, blackberries, wildflowers, rabbits, blackbirds and the green green grass of home.  One idea was lilies on a lake - what the heck has that got to do with brambles I asked myself.  Another was to feature Australian inspired flowers - the warratah and banksia spring to mind, and are still lurking there. What a rigmarole ...

... and a Bramble Blooms Pt 3 Update I'm calling on the Gods to thank the IT guy that I engaged to help me solve my Google and Blogspot problems.  He came to see me this morning, and it was a few dollars well spent to relieve my anxiety, and get me back into my blog.   Google help/support/community etc, including the bot - called Bard of all things, which makes me wonder if this is a nod to The Great Bard (Shakespeare) himself - couldn't resolve my issues.  Google Bard is still learning and wasn't helpful. It turns out that I had created the problem, but it took us a long time to sort it out.  Hopefully all is now resolved, as I have a lot to talk about!
